How Polymarket odds compare to a sportsbook’s
A sportsbook quotes American odds like −150 or +130. Polymarket sells contracts that pay $1 if the team wins, priced in cents: a 60¢ contract risks 60¢ to win 40¢, which is −150. To compare them fairly you have to add Polymarket’s trading fee to the price first, because you pay it on every contract you buy.
The fee is 0.0695 × price × (1 − price): 1.74¢ on a 50¢ contract, about 0.6¢ on a 10¢ one. That shape is why Polymarket tends to win on underdogs and lose on near coin-flips. Every Polymarket price on Oddy is after the fee. For any single price, use the Kalshi odds converter.
Polymarket vs sportsbooks: questions
Is Polymarket cheaper than sportsbooks?
Sometimes, not usually. On today’s board Polymarket beats every regulated sportsbook on 106 of 497 moneyline sides (21%) after its trading fee. On the rest at least one sportsbook pays more. Which side wins changes game to game, so compare before each bet.
Is Polymarket better for favorites or underdogs?
Underdogs, as a rule. Polymarket beats the best sportsbook on 18% of underdog sides today and 29% of favorites. Its fee peaks on coin flips and shrinks toward the extremes, and sportsbooks build more margin into long prices.
How much is Polymarket’s fee on sports?
Polymarket charges a taker fee of 0.0695 × price × (1 − price) per contract, so it is largest at 50¢ (1.74¢ per contract) and close to zero near 1¢ or 99¢. Oddy folds the fee into every Polymarket price it shows, so the odds you compare are what you are actually paid.
How do I convert a Polymarket price to American odds?
A contract pays $1 if it wins. At 40¢ you risk 40¢ to win 60¢: decimal odds 1 ÷ 0.40 = 2.50, American +150. At 60¢ you risk 60¢ to win 40¢: decimal 1.67, American −150. Add the fee to the price first for the real number; the Kalshi odds converter does both for every price from 1¢ to 99¢.
